| Introducing Podcast Responder
|
Firstly let me explain exactly how podcasting works. Then I'll explain to you what the big problem with the current systems are and how Podcast Responder is sneaky and gets round this problem to grab back some of the user's control.
A podcast is nothing more than an audio or video file stored on a webserver (yes I know that a video should be called a videocast but hey let's bundle them together the system is the same - otherwise I get confused which means you probably will too).
An end listener or watcher uses a piece of software called a podcatcher - or might even have the podcatcher features built into their browser!
On the website there is a configuration file that lists one or more of your audio files that uses RSS 2.0 xml formatting. Don't worry about the terminology - its just a text file accessable with a browser like any other web page.
The purpose of the control file is to tell the podcatching software what files have been updated and when.
Configuring the podcatching software to read this control file on a regular basis is called 'subscribing' - like subscribing to an autoresponder. OR even like subscribing to an autoresponder - but it's not an email client!
If the control file is different from the last time the podcatcher software had a look then it works out if it needs to download the latest audio file. If it does, it downloads it to the listeners computer. Some podcatching software then copies the file over to the users iPod or Zen if its connected. The podcatching software may start up Windows Media Player or iTunes and start playing the file. This is all configured by the end user depending on how they want to use it. The beauty of this is once the listener has subscribed to a feed its completely automatic - on autopilot!
The result is that when you make the right changes to the RSS file, the podcatcher client will download the latest audio file.
Aaarg...Problem! It only downloads the latest audio file. That's fine for newsletter type podcasts or radio shows but I want to replace my autoresponder with audio. So if I've got 5 audio files listed, the podcatcher client will - by default - only download file 5. Doh!
The podcatcher software always looks in the same place for the control file so you could make a change one day after the other. Nope that won't work. It still only downloads the last one listed.
When I recently looked at Podcast Alley it listed over 34,000 registered Podcasts with nearly 2 million episodes (1 episode is 1 audio or video file). Podcast Net listed nearly 40,000 feeds. The figures are staggering. I think you'll agree That's a huge marketplace!
Imagine this. You power up your laptop or PC and connect to the internet. Automatically a piece of software on your machine checks a handful of RSS feeds you've subscribed to and if there are any new audio or video files it downloads them immediately to your iPod or other handheld device - Or it starts playing them in iTunes or Windows Media Player immediately. No email client to open, no delete or SPAM buttons – nothing. The download is there waiting for you to put your headphones on or plug in your speakers and press play. Thats how podcasting or videocasting works for the end user.
Simple, elegant, transparent and fast.
Because downloading audio and video is a relatively new thing - unsullyed by SPAM or filtering, most people will press play, they will listen and your message will get across. They are much more likely to download an audio file and listen to it than open an email.

...sheer percentages. If from your website you currently have 10% of visitors leave their name and email, then round about another 5%-10% will find a way to subscribe to your audio feed. If say 15% of your email subscribers actually turn into customers then about the same (with the same text content only in audio format) are likely to become customers. If you do both then you've increased your sales. Of course because content delivered by Podcast Responder is audio or video you can do so much more than with written text so you can up that to over 25% with good quality content.
Don't take just my word for it though, marketing superstars like Stephen Pierce, Alex Mandossian, Armand Morin, Jim Edwards and Mike Filsaime are have been embracing multimedia alternatives to email marketing in a big way for a few years already - and making a lot of money in the process
Go on, think about it for a moment, do the math - just converting the extra 3-4% of visitors this way can have a huge impact on your bottom line. I know when I introduced a just a single video onto one of my other websites the conversions doubled - overnight! Think how much more you could make by tapping into this brand new customer base that avoids reading emails and junks most things instinctively...
Configure an unlimted number of dynamically created RSS feedss with enclosures. You can have a sales feed to try and get more customers , a customer specific feed to reduce buyers remorse by training your customers on your products or services and inform them of special promotions. You can even deliver products using a feed!
Have an unlimted number of audio/video files associated with each feed . The only limit is your webhost space!
Create an unlimted number of broadcasts. Broadcasts are configured for specific dates rather than in a sequence, and you would use them for special promotions etc..
You can also use Broadcasts in Podcast Responder to manage your own standard podcast feed or combine the two for even more powerful contacts with potential customers.
Support for dozens of different audio and video file formats.
Use a simple web based interface so you can configure and change anywhere in the world where you can get Internet access.
Monitor each feed – so you can see how popular your feed is and which of the audio or video files in the sequence are being downloaded. This is important because unlike an email autoresponder where the system usually informs you when someone un-subscribes, a RSS feed does not do that.
If you can install (or find someone who can install for you) wordpress or joomla then Podcast Responder is no different. It comes with an installation script that does pretty much everything for you - just fill in the form click ok and it's ready to login and add feeds immediately. You could be up and running in less than 10 minutes!
Ok so you have a webhost, what else will you need? Some Audio or Video files to create your message sequence. To begin with a microphone and some free recording software will get you started. Or alternatively screen capture programs like Camtasia or Camstudio can be used. It's not that difficult to create content in Audio or Video format anymore - just do a search on YouTube for Camtasia, Moviemaker, Camstudio or Audacity and you'll find tons of tutorial videos; just the tip of the iceberg...
Alternatively you could farm out the audio or video production via elance or one of the specialist voice over artists - it all depends on how big your marketing budget is.You don't need to be a technical expert - just a little practice with a microphone, some simple recording software and you'll be turning out fabulous audio messages quite quickly.
Originally I developed this software just for my use. But after a few people almost broke my hand off wanting a copy I was persuaded to let it out to the public. As this is brand new system and has never been done before online, I could charge a huge amount for the software. A quick search found me a few own server based Email Autoresponders in the $150 range. Or alternatively a year of a hosted autoresponder is likely to be $220 or even much more. The software is delivered online so there are no shipping costs to worry about or delays mailing it to you and it's available for immediate download 24x7.
So how much? $470 ? $250? $199?. No I'm not going to charge anywhere as near that much because I want no excuse for you to get started as soon as possible and join, with me, the exclusive group of marketers who are riding the crest of the wave of online audio and Video. So as an introductory price it will cost you the measly sum of $97 $67 for the first 100 people who buy a copy. Then the price will go up - period.
